What is binary ionic naming

When theres just 2 elements (metal + nonmetal)

2
New cards

What are the rules for binary ionic naming?

Write the first element as is, write the second element but replace the end with -ide, and NO prefixes(bi, tri) bc thats only with covalent compounds

3
New cards

What are polyatomics?

A group of elements into one. They are always found together in nature and are everywhere. Nothing about them can change.

4
New cards

How do we do swap and drop with polyatomics?

Put it in parenthesis

5
New cards

What are ternary?

An element and a polyatomic ion

6
New cards

What are the rules for writing ternary formula to name?

Name the first element or polyatomic and name the second polyatomic. Ex:CaCO3- Calcium Carbonate

7
New cards

What are the rules for writing ternary name to formula?

Write element symbol, write oxidation #, swap and drop oxidation # and leave the sign. If oxidation numbers cancel out then just dont write them.

8
New cards

Write 1-10 in roman numerals

I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X

9
New cards

How do we know the ratio between elements?

With the subscripts so Na2O would be 2:1

10
New cards

Which elements don’t need roman numerals?

Cd, Ag, and Zn

11
New cards

Which elements need roman numerals?

Pd, Sn

12
New cards

What is relative strength, charge, and properties of ionic

Strong, high boiling and melting point, solid, brittle, full charge

13
New cards

What is relative strength, charge, and properties of polar

Middle, properties are somewhere in the middle, partial charge

14
New cards

What is relative strength, charge, and properties of nonpolar

Weak, low boiling and melting point, more likely to be a gas, low viscosity (thickness), no charges

15
New cards

Does ionic or covalent have electrostatic force?

Ionic

16
New cards

What is electrostatic force?

the force of attraction or repulsion between two charged particles.

17
New cards

What is intramolecular force?

Force holding two elements together in a molecule. Stronger

18
New cards

What is intermolecular force?

Force holding two molecules together. Weaker

19
New cards

What is polar covalent?

Bonds between two nonmetals that are different elements and one element takes more electrons. So the molecule is lobsided and not symmetrical.

20
New cards

What is non polar covalent?

Bonds between two nonmetals that are the same element and electrons are shared equality so the molecule is symmetrical.

21
New cards

Put in order of most to least electronegative between the two elements:the three types of bonds

Ionic, polar, nonpolar
