heterogeneous mixture
A mixture where different particles do not blend smoothly throughout.
suspension
A mixture containing large particles that will settle out if left undisturbed.
colloid
A mixture containing intermediate-sized particles that will not settle out if left undisturbed.
Tyndall effect
The scattering of light by particles in a colloid.
Brownian motion
The random motion of particles suspended in a medium.
homogeneous mixture
A mixture where different particles blend smoothly and are not visible throughout.
solution
A homogeneous mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another.
solute
The substance that is dissolved in a solution.
solvent
The dissolving medium, or the substance that does the dissolving.
soluble
Describes a substance that can be dissolved in a given solvent.
miscible
Describes two liquids that are soluble in one another.
immiscible
Describes two liquids that can be mixed together but separate shortly after.
solvation
The process of surrounding solute particles with solvent particles to form a solution.
unsaturated solution
A solution that contains less than the maximum amount of dissolved solute for a given temperature and pressure.
saturated solution
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved for a given temperature and pressure.
supersaturated solution
A solution that has more than the maximum amount of solute dissolved at a given temperature.
strong electrolyte
A substance that conducts electricity very well when dissolved.
weak electrolyte
A substance that conducts electricity poorly when dissolved.
non-electrolyte
A substance that does not conduct electricity when dissolved.
