Waste Dredged Sludge (WDS)
A hazardous waste byproduct of river dredging, rich in organic materials and inorganic elements such as Si, Al, Fe, Ca, and Mg, utilized in this study for radiation shielding.
Cd-MOFs
Bimetallic cadmium metal-organic frameworks synthesized by co-precipitation of cadmium acetate salt and sodium salt of tartaric acid for use as filler in wastewater sludge composites.
N-CuO
Nano-copper oxide prepared using copper (II) acetate as a precursor and urea, exhibiting a monoclinic phase and acting as nanofillers for X-ray and γ-ray attenuation.
SCdMCu-X
A designation for nanocomposites formed by combining wastewater sludge with Cd-MOFs and N-CuO by liquid-phase synthesis, where X=0,1,3, and 5 represents the weight fraction.
Linear Attenuation Coefficient (LAc)
A parameter (μ) that quantifies the interaction of photons with matter per unit length, calculated using the equation I=Ioe−μx.
Mass Attenuation Coefficient (MAc)
The linear attenuation (LAc) divided by the density (ρ) of the material, represented by the formula MAc=ρLAc.
Half-Value Layer (HVl)
The thickness of shielding material required to reduce the radiation intensity to one-half of its original value, expressed as HVl=LAc0.693.
Tenth Value Layer (TVl)
The thickness of material needed to decrease the radiation intensity to one-tenth of its initial value, calculated as TVl=3.323×HVl.
Mean Free Path (MFp)
The average distance a radiation photon travels between collisions, defined by the formula MFp=1.443×HVl.
Radiation Protection Efficiency (RPE)
A measure of the attenuation provided by shielding material, determined by the formula RPe,%=(1−IoI)×100.
Effective Atomic Number (Zeff)
A parameter representing the average atomic number of a composite material; higher values generally indicate stronger radiation interaction via the photoelectric effect and Compton scattering.
Fast Neutron Removal Cross-Section (FNRCS or ΣR)
A parameter describing the neutron-slowing characteristics of a material, with the SCdMCu-5 sample exhibiting a value of 0.093cm−1.
Relaxation Length (\lambda_{\Sigma R})
The mean distance a fast neutron travels in a material before an interaction occurs, calculated using information from the fast neutron removal cross-section as λΣR=ΣR1.
MCNP5
A Monte Carlo code simulation system used to theoretically expect the intensity of γ-rays and simulate particle movement for radiation shielding evaluations.
PhYX Software
A web-based tool (web PhYX/PSD software) used to calculate radiation shielding parameters and assess the performance of various materials.
Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FT-IR)
A characterization technique used to identify functional groups; for Cd-Tartaric MOFs, it revealed stretching vibrations of chelated carboxylic groups (−COOM) at 1535,1377,1341 and 1215cm−1.
