Emmett Till

A boy in the South that died because he harassed a woman. The murderers were not guilty which was decided by an all-white jury. His death showed the world the cruelty of Jim Crow segregation in the South and was a big cause for the Civil Rights Movement to start. Later, it was revealed that Till never harassed the woman.

Desegregation of Schools

Brown v. Board of Education was a decision that the Supreme Court made which was that separating/segregating students based on their race in public schools was unconstitutional. This overturned the “separate is equal” belief that was decided by the Supreme Court in the Plessy vs. Ferguson case.

Little Rock Nine

A group of nine black students who signed up to attend an all white school called Central High School. On the first day of classes, Governor Faubus called in the National Guard to prevent them from entering. President Eisenhower passed Executive Order 10730 that allowed 10,000 federal troops to protect the LRN into the school.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

Started when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery bus and she went to jail. African Americans decided to not use the buses as transportation which is 75% of bus riders and the boycott lasted for over a year. In 1956, a federal district court confirmed that segregation on buses is unconstitutional.
