Simple Squamous Epithelium (p. 8)
Epithelium consisting of one layer of thin, flattened cells; in the kidney it lines the glomerular capsule and blood vessels.

Basement Membrane (p. 8)
A thin supporting layer beneath epithelial cells that separates the epithelium from underlying tissue.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium (p. 8)
Epithelium consisting of one layer of cube-shaped cells; in the kidney it lines the tubules.

Epithelium consisting of multiple layers of cells with flattened cells at the surface; lines the esophagus.
Squamous Superficial Cells (p. 8)
The flattened cells at the surface of stratified squamous epithelium.
Basal (Germinative) Cells (p. 8)
Cells located at the base of the epithelium that produce new epithelial cells.
Lumen (p. 8)
The open interior space of a hollow organ or structure through which materials pass.
Simple Columnar Epithelium (p. 8)
Epithelium consisting of one layer of tall, column-shaped cells.
Goblet Cells (p. 8)
Specialized epithelial cells that produce and secrete mucus.
Microvilli (p. 8)
Small projections from the cell surface that increase surface area, helping with absorption.
Striated / Brush Border (p. 8)
The appearance created by numerous microvilli along the apical surface of epithelial cells.
Basement Membrane in Jejunum (p. 8)
The supporting layer beneath the simple columnar epithelial cells that separates them from underlying tissue.
Lumen of the Jejunum (p. 8)
The open interior space of the intestine through which its contents pass.
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium (p. 8)
An epithelium where cells appear in multiple layers due to nuclei heights, but attach to the same basement membrane; lines the trachea.
Cilia (p. 8)
Hair-like projections from the cell surface that move material along the epithelial surface.
Cilia vs. Microvilli (p. 8)
Cilia are primarily used to move material, while microvilli primarily increase surface area for absorption.

Mucus-secreting cells that produce mucus in the tracheal epithelium.

The supporting layer beneath the tracheal epithelial cells that separates the epithelium from underlying tissue.

The open interior passageway through which air travels.
Function of Goblet Cells (p. 8)
They secrete mucus.

They increase the cell's surface area, especially for absorption.

They move material along the epithelial surface.
Structural Difference: Cilia vs. Microvilli (p. 8)
Cilia are longer, motile projections specialized for movement, whereas microvilli are smaller projections specialized mainly for increasing surface area.
Hematoxylin and Eosin Staining (p. 8)
Hematoxylin generally stains nuclei and other acidic structures blue-purple; eosin generally stains proteins and cytoplasmic structures pink.
