Management of Malaria: Pregnant Women - Prevention

Sulfadoxine + Pyrimethamine (Fansidar)[Antifolates]

* After 16 weeks gestation

* Total of 3 doses

*Folic acid supplements should be given

Pregnant Women - Uncomplicated Malaria - 1st Trimester

Quinine

Pregnant Women - Uncomplicated Malaria - 2nd & 3rd Trimester

ACT e.g. Coartem

Pregnant Women - Complicated Malaria

Quinine IV

Management of Malaria: Infants & Young Children

ACTs should be first-line.

Malaria Treatment: Children less than 8 & Pregnancy

Tetracyclines - Contraindicated

Toxoplasmosis Treatment

Sulfadiazine + Pyrimethamine

Leucovorin

prevent folate deficiency

Toxoplasmosis Prophylaxis

Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole

Chloroquine Use

Used as prophylaxis for chloroquine-sensitive malaria.

Artesunate Use

Complicated/Severe Malaria

Fansidar Composition

Pyrimethamine + Sulfadoxine

Coartem Composition

Artemether + Lumefantrine
