Adipose tissue

Tissue that stores triglycerides ; cushions and insulates the body .

Apical

Side of epithelial tissue which faces the lumen ( hollow space ) of an organ .

Areolar

Most widely distributed connective tissue in the body .

Blood

Connective tissue with liquid ECM .

Bone

Contains cells known as osteocytes

Cardiac muscle

Involuntary muscle containing cells connected to each other by intercalated discs .

Cartilage

Contains cells known as chondrocytes

Collagen fibers

Fibers in ECM that are very tough , and resist being pulled apart .

Connective tissue

This is the most abundant , widely distributed and histologically variable type of tissue in the human body .

Elastic fibers

Type of fibers that allow some types of connective tissue to stretch .

Epithelial tissue

Type of tissue which lines body cavities and covers body surfaces .

Exocrine gland

Produce products that are released through a duct onto a body sur face or into a cavity .

Fibroblasts

Type of cell that forms collagen fibers .

Keratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue

Type of epithelium found in the epidermis of the skin ; the outer layer is made of dead , compressed cells .

Neurons

Cells that respond to stimuli and generate and conduct electrical signals .

Pseudostratified

A single layer of cells , all attached to the basement membrane , that appears to be in several layers

Reticular tissue

Framework of lymph nodes , spleen , tonsils , bone marrow .

Skeletal muscle

Voluntary muscle , containing long , unbranched , striated , multinucleated cells .

Smooth muscle

Involuntary muscle type found in the walls of hollow organs .

Spongy bone

Filled with bone marrow in several parts of the skeleton .

Squamous

Thin cells shaped like scales .
