New Moon (The Dark Moon)
The first phase of the lunar cycle where the Sun and Moon are at 0∘ elongation (exact conjunction). - 45 degrees. It represents seed-planting, beginnings, and intentions, although the Moon is considered 'combust' and debilitated.
Waxing Crescent (The Emerging Sliver)
A phase with a Sun-Moon elongation of 45-90 degrees where the Moon is ahead of the Sun and gaining light; it represents faith, early effort, and taking first steps toward intentions.
First Quarter (The Half Moon Rising)
An exact square with a Sun-Moon elongation of 90∘ - 135 degrees. It is a tense phase of crisis and decisive action, requiring problem-solving and overcoming inertia to reach success.
Waxing Gibbous (The Nearing Fullness)
A phase with a Sun-Moon elongation of 135 - 180 degrees. focused on refinement, preparation, and editing. The Moon is gaining in light and matters are close to fruition.
Full Moon (The Culmination)
The peak of the lunar cycle with a Sun-Moon elongation of 180-225 degrees(exact opposition). It is a time of maximum strength, visibility, illumination, and outcomes relative to preceding intentions.
Waning Gibbous (The Disseminating Moon)
A post-peak phase with a Sun-Moon elongation of 225 -270 degrees It represents sharing, gratitude, and distributing knowledge or results that emerged at the Full Moon.
Last Quarter (The Half Moon Waning)
A phase at 270-315 degrees elongation (exact square) that marks a turning point of surrender. It is a time for release, house-cleaning, and closing loops rather than pushing forward.
Waning Crescent (The Balsamic Moon)
The final phase before the New Moon with an elongation of 315-360 degrees. It is a spiritual, yin phase for rest, surrender, dreaming, and clearing emotional residue.
Combust
In traditional astrology, a condition where the Moon is too close to the Sun, causing it to be debilitated so that emotions may feel muted or overwhelmed by external circumstances.
Hellenistic Waxing Moon Timing
A timing perspective where a Moon gaining light and speed is seen as providing increasing support and momentum to any planets configured to it.
Hellenistic Waning Moon Timing
A timing perspective where a Moon losing light is associated with processes of releasing, completing, and clearing rather than building.
