Interphalangeal (IP) joint
The joint between the phalanges of the fingers.
Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint
The joint between the metacarpal bones and the proximal phalanges.
Distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint
The joint located between the distal and middle phalanges.
Proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint
The joint located between the proximal and middle phalanges.
Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint
The joint between the carpals and metacarpals.
Positioning Criteria
Guidelines for correct positioning of fingers, thumbs, and hands for imaging.
Evaluation Criteria
Standards to assess the quality of radiographic images.
True lateral position
Position where the true lateral view is achieved, with correct alignment of the anatomy.
Obliquity
The angle at which the hand is rotated during a radiographic projection.
Central Ray (CR)
The specific point where the x-ray beam is directed in radiographic imaging.
SID (Source to Image Distance)
The distance from the radiation source to the image receptor.
Joint spaces
Areas between joints that should be open in radiographic images.
Collimation
The process of aligning the x-ray beam to the area of interest while minimizing exposure.
Digital Angle Alignment
Ensuring that digits are parallel to the image receptor to avoid distortion.
kVp (Kilovolt peak)
A measure of the maximum voltage applied across the x-ray tube.
mAs (Milliampere-seconds)
A measurement of the quantity of x-rays produced.
Focal spot size
The size of the area on the x-ray tube where the x-rays are generated.
Anatomical side marker
A marker used to indicate the side of the body being imaged.
Radial and Ulnar Alignment
Proper alignment of the radius and ulna as seen in lateral wrist views.
