Aluminium exposure is associated with respiratory and neurobehavioral effects
Which condition is definitely associated with aluminium exposure? Lung fibrosis? Asthma? Encephalopathy with dementia?Lung Ca?
Lung fibrosis
Aluminium exposure can occur through different routes . Which is the main route of exposure for workers? which form?
Inhalation of Aluminium Oxide dust
Aluminium workers working in potroom/ smelting can develop asthma-like symptoms. Is this trully occupational asthma due to Aluminium?
No defiinitive conclusion. The potroom has other noxious agents such as sulphur dioxide, PAHs, flourides, CO and caustic soda which can cause respiratory symptoms.
How is Aluminium Produced?
Bauxite (55% Aluminium ore) converted to Alumina through the Bayers Process followed by electrolysis in the potroom. Noxious gases produced in potroom and workers develop Asthma like symptoms which can persist even after leaving.
Shavers disease or Aluminosis
Rare form of Pneumoconiosis or interstitial lung disease caused by exposure to fine aluminium dust or powder. Pulmonary fibrosis. “aluminum lung”
Dialysis induced encephalopathy and osteomalacia can occur because of aluminium exposure
