Time Management
The process of planning the time available in accordance with goals to achieve; essential for nurses to prioritize client care activities according to time constraints.
Client Care Coordination
A necessity to provide quality client care and reduce the risk of adverse events, requiring nurses to be aware of their role on the health care team and manage time effectively.
Delegation
The process of one person assigning tasks to another, which in nursing should be standardized with clear guidelines to ensure activities are within the health care personnel’s scope of practice.
The Five Rights of Delegation
Right task, Right circumstance, Right person, Right directions and communication, Right supervision and evaluation.
Team Nursing
Pairs two or more nurses together as a team to care for a group of clients, utilizing various experience levels and skills while sharing responsibilities.
Interprofessional Collaboration
The collaboration between different professions; becoming increasingly important due to the complexity of client health conditions and treatments.
Barriers to Interprofessional Collaboration
Miscommunication, Distrust, Lack of respect among provider types, Different levels of perceived importance, Misunderstanding of each other’s roles.
SMART Goals
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely goals to organize your day.
Priority Setting
Delivery of nursing care based on the urgency or importance of client needs, where the most critical intervention is completed first.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
A pyramid with five levels: basic needs, psychological needs, and self-fulfillment whereby basic needs are typically met first.
ABCDE Method
Algorithm to establish priorities in any clinical crisis: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure.
CURE Hierarchy
Acronym to prioritize client care: Critical, Urgent, Routine, and Extras.
Triage
Assigns priority based upon a quick initial, focused assessment followed by the assignment of an acuity level indicative of the amount of time a client can safely wait for screening and treatment.
Triage Levels
A 5-level system that designates level 1 as most urgent (life-threatening) to level 5 as least urgent (stable, nonemergency).
Resource Allocation
The process of assigning a portion or amount of a service. Priority setting involves the allocation of resources in caring for clients.
