55
New cards

What forms of love existed in Greek writings and which ones were used in reference to Jesus with Lazarus and his sisters?

Greek writings: agape (ἀγάπη), “supreme love” phileo “friendship love” eros (ἔρ ς), “sensual love” (not in NT) storge (στοργή), “affection for family” (not in NT) Used phileo with Lazaras, which demonstrates the deep relationship that Jesus had with Lazuras since “love” was reserved for only those who had a close connection to each other

ἀγαπά (agape?) is used with Mary and Martha. This form of love is likened to “God love” (pure, holy, dispel rumors)

56
New cards

How did the disciples react to Jesus’ euphemism concerning Lazarus’ death and then His explanation of that euphemism?

Jesus must awaken Lazarus from his “sleep”. As usual, the disciples misunderstand His euphemism and inform Jesus that sleep is good for a sick man (vs. 12). Jesus cuts to the chase and tells the disciples that Lazarus is dead (vs. 14) and He is looking forward to instilling more belief in His disciples by the future miracle. Thomas (Hebrew for “twin”), also called Didymus (Greek for “twin”), answers with extreme cynicism and suggests that they go and die with Lazarus!

57
New cards

What is the timeline relating to Lazarus’ death?

It probably took the runner one day to get from Mary and Martha in Bethany to Jesus in Jerusalem. Then, Jesus remained in Jerusalem for two more days after receiving word of Lazarus’ illness Add another day for Jesus to travel from Jerusalem to Bethany (1+2+1 = 4 days)  Lazarus probably died shortly after being sent to Jesus since Martha declares that he was in the tomb for four days

58
New cards

How did Martha react to Jesus’ coming to Bethany and how did He respond to her?

Martha meets Jesus before He arrives in Bethany and, upon meeting Jesus, Martha exercised great faith in Jesus’ abilities. Jesus responded by prophesizing of Lazarus’ resurrection. which Martha erroneously interprets as the future resurrection to judgment.

59
New cards

How did Mary react to Jesus’ coming to Bethany and how did He respond to her?

Mary meets Jesus where Martha left Him. the mourners follow Mary out. When Mary arrives at Jesus’ location, she responds in similar kind as her sister by acknowledging Jesus’ power in being able to have stopped Lazarus’ death (vs. 32). In response to Mary and the Jew’s utter weeping (vs. 33), Jesus showed great empathy by sorrowing with them over Lazarus’ death and requesting the place of his burial

60
New cards

What were the different reactions to the miracle of Lazarus’ resurrection from the dead?

Lazarus’ resurrection causes animosity among the Jews Some believed, but others ran to tell the Pharasees

61
New cards

What are the three great principles developed from Mary’s act of humility?

Mary uses very expensive perfume The process of the perfume’s application is notable (using her hair to clean His feet) the affects of the perfume’s application are interesting (others benefit from the anointing itself & Jesus’s response to Judas

62
New cards

Which disciple reacted negatively to Mary’s act of humility?

Judas Iscariot

63
New cards

In John 12, who do the Jews consider killing in addition to Jesus?

Lazarus

64
New cards

What were the people’s reactions to Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem?

The people’s reaction to Jesus’ entrance was to meet Him with kingly praise

The palms were significant since they symbolized the triumphant entry of Simon Maccabeaeus into Jerusalem after defeating the Syrians (1 Macc 13:51; 2 Macc 10:7).

The saying of “Hossana” was important because it literally translated into “Save us now.”

65
New cards

66
New cards

What is the paradox of Jesus’ glorification?

He compared His death and resurrection to a seed’s death. While the seed’s falling to the ground would “kill” it, its presence in the soil would invariably result in the growth of another plant. Although the seed “dies” in loneliness, it will live in compassion with the fruit of its sacrifice. We understand this now to symbolize Jesus’ death bringing life (fruit) to a multitude of believers. This principle is what helps motivate Jesus to fulfill the purpose of the cross
