Dorsal cavity

A posterior body cavity that includes the cranial cavity, nasal cavity, Oral cavity, Orbital/optic cavity, and vertebral cavity.

Ventral cavity

An anterior body cavity containing the thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity.

cranial cavity

A subdivision of the dorsal cavity containing the brain.

nasal cavity

A cavity located within the dorsal cavity structure.

Oral cavity

A cavity located within the head area, listed under the dorsal cavity divisions.

Orbital/optic cavity

A cavity housing the eye, listed under the dorsal cavity divisions.

vertebral cavity

A cavity within the dorsal cavity that houses the spinal cord.

thoracic cavity

A upper portion of the ventral cavity containing the pleural cavity and pericardial cavity.

pleural cavity

A cavity surrounding the lung, situated within the thoracic cavity.

Mediastinum

A tissue mass and central compartment in the thoracic cavity that is specifically noted as not a body cavity.

pericardial cavity

A cavity surrounding the heart, located within the thoracic cavity.

diaphragm (muscle)

A muscle located between the thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity.

abdominopelvic cavity

A major division of the ventral cavity located inferior to the diaphragm, consisting of the abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity.

abdominal cavity

The superior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity.

pelvic cavity

The inferior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity.

Abdominopelvic Quadrants

The four grid sections of the abdominopelvic area consisting of the right upper, left upper, right lower, and left lower quadrants.

right hypochondriac

The upper right abdominopelvic region adjacent to the epigastric region.

epigastric

The superior middle abdominopelvic region located above the umbilical region.

left hypochondriac

The upper left abdominopelvic region adjacent to the epigastric region.

right lumbar/lateral

The middle right abdominopelvic region adjacent to the umbilical region.

umbilical

The central abdominopelvic region surrounding the navel.

left lumbar/lateral

The middle left abdominopelvic region adjacent to the umbilical region.

right iliac/inguinal

The lower right abdominopelvic region adjacent to the hypogastric/pubic region.

Hypogastric/pubic

The inferior middle abdominopelvic region located below the umbilical region.

left iliac/inguinal

The lower left abdominopelvic region adjacent to the hypogastric/pubic region.

frontal (coronal) plane

A vertical plane that divides the body or organ into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.

transverse (horizontal)

A horizontal plane that divides the body or organ into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) portions.

sagittal (median) plane

A vertical plane that divides the body or organ into right and left portions.

midsagittal plane

A specific sagittal plane passing directly through the midline, dividing the body into equal right and left halves.

parasagittal plane

A sagittal plane that does not pass through the midline, dividing the body into unequal right and left portions.

cross section

A cut made perpendicular across the long axis of a structure.

longitudinal section

A cut made parallel along the long axis of a structure.

oblique section

A cut made at an angle between the horizontal and vertical planes.
