Cancer
Uncontrolled cell growth caused by genetic damage.
Apoptosis
The body's natural ability to destroy abnormal or cancerous cells.
Angiogenesis
The process by which malignant cells create their own blood supply.
Progression to Malignancy
The sequence from hyperplasia to dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, and finally to malignancy.
Primary tumor
The original site where cancer originates.
Secondary tumor
Tumors that result from the metastasis of cancer to other areas.
TNM Staging System
A system used to describe the size and extent of cancer based on Tumor size, Node involvement, and Metastasis.
Stage 0 Cancer
In situ cancer where abnormal cells have not spread.
Stage IV Cancer
Cancer that has metastasized to distant body parts.
Modifiable risk factors
Factors that can be changed to reduce cancer risk, such as smoking and obesity.
Non-modifiable risk factors
Factors that cannot be changed, such as age and genetics.
Delirium
Acute and sudden confusion that is a reversible condition.
Extravasation
Leakage of chemotherapy into surrounding tissue, which can cause severe damage.
Neutropenic Precautions
Measures taken to protect immunocompromised patients from infection.
Hypercalcemia
An elevated level of calcium in the blood, often leading to confusion and muscle weakness.
SIADH
Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, causing water retention and hyponatremia.
Lymphedema
Swelling due to accumulation of fluid, often after cancer treatment that involves lymph node dissection.
Ductal breast cancer
The most common type of breast cancer, originating in the milk ducts.
Whipple Procedure
Surgery to remove the head of the pancreas, preserving some pancreatic function.
Acute Inflammation
Short-term inflammatory response characterized by redness, heat, swelling, and pain.
Chronic Inflammation
Prolonged inflammation that can cause tissue damage.
Osteoarthritis
A degenerative joint disease with progressive cartilage breakdown.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
An autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the joints.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
A multisystem autoimmune disorder that can cause joint pain and severe complications.
HIV
A retrovirus that targets and destroys CD4 T-cells, leading to immunodeficiency.
PrEP
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, medication taken to reduce the risk of contracting HIV.
Anaphylaxis
Severe allergic reaction characterized by massive histamine release and tissue edema.
Meningitis
Infection and inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Lumbar Puncture
A procedure to collect cerebrospinal fluid for testing and diagnosis.
Sinusitis
Inflammation of the sinuses leading to facial pressure and congestion.
Influenza
An infectious viral illness characterized by fever, aches, and fatigue.
