Articulation
Involves the modification of airflow and phonatory vibration to achieve different speech sounds.
Cranial Bones (Unpaired)
Occipital, Frontal, Sphenoid
Cranial Bones (Paired)
Temporals, Parietals
Facial Bones (Paired)
Maxillae, Zygomatic, Nasal, Palatine, Lacrimal, Mandible
Maxillae
Forms the upper jaw and part of the hard palate.
Zygomatic
Also known as cheekbones; articulate with the maxillae, temporal, and frontal bones and form the zygomatic arch.
Nasal Bones
Form the bridge of the nose.
Palatine Bones
Form the posterior part of the hard palate and part of the orbits.
Lacrimal Bones
Smallest bones of the face; located on the lateral part of the upper nose.
Mandible
The lower jawbone; the only movable bone of the face.
Hyoid Bone
Not technically a facial bone but located in the neck; supports the tongue and is involved in swallowing.
Nasal Cavity
Bordered inferiorly by the hard palate, superiorly and posteriorly by the sphenoid, and anteriorly by the nasal bones and septal cartilage.
Nasal Conchae
Wave-like structures within the nasal cavity that maximize surface area.
Oral Cavity
Bordered superiorly by the hard palate and the velum, inferiorly by the tongue, anteriorly by the lips, and posteriorly by the oropharynx; location of chewing and much articulation.
Faucial pillars
Muscles lining the posterior lateral edges of the oral cavity; form the border between oral and pharyngeal cavities.
Pharyngeal Cavity (Pharynx)
Divided into nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx; contains pharyngeal constrictors.
Mobile Articulators
Lips, teeth, tongue, (glottis)
Immobile Articulators
Hard palate, alveolar ridge, velum
Orbicularis Oris
Orofacial muscle in an orbis around the mouth; reference orofacial muscle.
Levator Anguli Oris
Vertical orofacial muscle that lifts corners of mouth.
Depressor Anguli Oris
Vertical orofacial muscle that pulls corners of mouth down.
Mentalis
Vertical orofacial muscle that elevates chin.
Risorius
Transverse orofacial muscle that pulls mouth sideways.
Buccinator
Transverse orofacial muscle that pulls cheeks inwards & stabilizes them.
Zygomatic major
Angular orofacial muscle that elevates and retracts angle of mouth.
Mandibular Elevators
Mandibular temporalis, Mandibular masseter, Internal/medial pterygoid
Mandibular Depressors
Anterior digastric, Mylohyoid, Geniohyoid, External/lateral pterygoid
Intrinsic Tongue Muscles
Longitudinal (superior & inferior), Vertical, Transverse
Extrinsic Tongue Muscles
Palatoglossus, Styloglossus, Hyoglossus, Genioglossus
Velar Muscles
Levator veli palatini, Uvular muscle, Tensor veli palatini, Palatoglossus, Palatopharyngeus
Pharyngeal Constrictors
Superior, Middle, Inferior
Resonance
Filtering of vocal sound.
Velopharyngeal Port (VP)
The opening between the velum and the pharynx; regulates connection between nasal cavity and oral/pharyngeal cavities.
Consonant Production Parameters
Voicing, Place, Manner
Labial Sounds
Sounds involving one or more lips.
Dental Sounds
Linguadental (tongue tip placed between teeth), and labiodental (upper teeth compressed onto lower lip).
Alveolar Sounds
Sounds made at the alveolar ridge.
Vowels
Tongue shape and degree of mouth opening determine sound; do not involve obstruction of the oral/nasal cavities.
blue- zygomatic; red- maxilla; yellow- nasal; purple- lacrimal; green- mandible
