Cell Membrane
Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Selectively Permeable
Property of the cell membrane that allows some substances to pass while excluding others.
Cell Transport
The movement of substances across the cell membrane.
Concentration Gradient
A difference in the concentration of a substance between two areas.
Passive Transport
Movement of substances from high concentration to low concentration that does not require energy (ATP).
Diffusion
Movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration until equilibrium is reached.
Equilibrium
State where particles are evenly distributed.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
Facilitated Diffusion
Movement of substances from high concentration to low concentration using transport proteins, without requiring ATP.
Hypotonic Solution
Solution with more water outside the cell, causing water to move into the cell and potentially swell or burst it.
Hypertonic Solution
Solution with less water outside the cell, causing water to move out and resulting in cell shrinkage.
Isotonic Solution
Solution where concentrations are equal, allowing water to move in and out at equal rates, maintaining cell size.
Active Transport
Movement of substances from low concentration to high concentration that requires energy (ATP).
Endocytosis
Process of moving large materials into the cell, requiring energy.
Exocytosis
Process of moving large materials out of the cell, requiring energy.
