Experiential Learning Online
The intentional design of a digital or virtual stand-in for direct experience — paired with structured, asynchronous prompts that guide learners through reflection, conceptualization, and application — so Kolb's full cycle can complete without physical co-presence.
Manufactured experience
A branching simulation, virtual case, or VR environment standing in for the "real" experience.
Social presence
Part of the Community of Inquiry framework where learners project themselves as real people in the space; trust and willingness to be vulnerable in reflection depend on this.
Cognitive presence
Part of the Community of Inquiry framework describing how far learners can construct and confirm meaning through sustained reflection and discourse — where Kolb's reflective and abstract phases live.
Teaching presence
The design and facilitation work (choosing the experience, framing prompts, structuring discussion) that makes the other two presences possible.
