algorithm
A process or description of steps that can be followed to complete a mathematical calculation.
base
The factor that is multiplied repeatedly in a power.
common factor
A factor shared between two or more numbers.
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The property stating that the product of a and b is equal to the product of b and a.
complex fraction
A fraction that has a fraction in either the numerator, denominator, or both.
composite figure
A figure made up of more than one geometric figure.
composite solid
A solid made up of more than one geometric solid.
cube
A polyhedron that has congruent squares as faces.
Distributive Property
States that a(b + c) is equal to ab + ac.
edge
The intersection of two faces of a three-dimensional figure.
equation
A mathematical sentence that uses an equals sign to show two expressions are equal.
face
One of the polygons that makes up a polyhedron.
geometric solid
A bounded, three-dimensional geometric figure.
greatest common factor (GCF)
The largest factor two or more numbers have in common.
kite
A quadrilateral with two pairs of consecutive congruent sides.
least common multiple (LCM)
The smallest multiple that two or more numbers have in common.
multiple
The product of a given whole number and another whole number.
multiplicative inverse
The number that when multiplied by a given number gives 1.
net
A two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional figure.
numeric expression
A mathematical phrase that contains numbers and operations.
parallelogram
A four-sided figure with two pairs of parallel sides.
polyhedron
A three-dimensional solid figure with polygons as faces.
positive rational number
A number that can be written as a fraction where both parts are whole numbers greater than 0.
power
A term with a base and an exponent.
pyramid
A polyhedron with one base and the same number of triangular faces as there are sides of the base.
reciprocal
The multiplicative inverse of a number.
relatively prime
Two numbers with no common factors other than 1.
repeating decimal
A decimal where a digit or group of digits repeats indefinitely.
right rectangular prism
A polyhedron with three pairs of congruent and parallel rectangular faces.
slant height
The distance measured along a triangular face of a pyramid.
straightedge
A tool to draw straight lines.
surface area
The total area of all the two-dimensional faces of a polyhedron.
terminating decimal
A decimal with a finite number of digits.
trapezoid
A quadrilateral with two parallel bases.
unit cube
A cube whose sides are all 1 unit long.
variable
A letter used to represent a number.
vertex
A point at which three or more edges of a polyhedron meet.
volume
The amount of space occupied by an object, measured in cubic units.
