Autocratic leader
-manager makes all the decisions, does not allow employee input
-can be effective in times of crisis or when immediate compliance with rules or procedures is needed
adv and disadv -autocrative
adv: -directions and procedures are clearly defined.
-Management can monitor performance as employees' roles and expectations are clearly set out.
-Time is used efficiently, and problems are dealt with quickly because there is no discussion or consultation
Disadv: -conflict increases as employees are competing for management approval
-Ideas are not shared, so employees do not get a chance to develop their skills, and they do not feel valued.
Participative leader
-The manager shares some of the decision making responbility with their subordinates
-employees have a need to believe that their employer cares about their needs
-communication is a 2 way procces
adv and disadv- participative
adv: -relationships are positive, employees are more likely to accept decisions
-Sharing ideas in work teams leads to higher levels of commitment of employees
-motivation and job satisfaction is high
disadvantage: -managers' control may be weakened and undermined
-any informal system may lead to collapse in management
-quality of decisions may be poor because compromises were made
Situational leader
-leadership styles change from situation to situation
-The manager adapts their style to the situation
-uses cues such as the type of task, the nature of the group, and other factors.

adv: -flexible and can create pleasant work
-increases awareness of leader
-can improve team cohesiveness as there is less internal conflict
disad: -can be ineffective in task oriented enviroments as the leader may not be able to be as flexible as needed, forced to be in a telling space
-focuses more on immediate needs rather than long-term needs
-shift in leadership style may create confusion.
Leadership
-element of a business- can be analysed with reference to both leadership styles and leadership traits
