Subject
The part of a sentence that tells who or what the clause is about.
Direct Object
The person or thing being acted upon by the verb.
Indirect Object
The person or thing towards which the action is directed.
Noun
A person, place, thing, or idea.
Pronoun
A word that replaces a noun.
Predicate Nominative
A noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames the subject.
Subject Complement
A word that follows a linking verb and adds more information about the subject.
Object Complement
A noun, pronoun, or adjective that follows and modifies or refers to the direct object.
Object of a Preposition
The noun or pronoun that follows a preposition.
Adjectival Modifier
A word that modifies nouns and pronouns.
Predicate Adjective
An adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject.
Verb
A word that expresses an action or a state of being.
Adverb
A word that modifies or describes verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
Conjunction
A word that combines words, phrases, and clauses.
Action Verb
A verb that expresses a physical or mental action.
Linking Verb
A verb that connects the subject with its complement.
Helping Verb
A verb used with another verb to form a tense or mood.
Adverbial Modifier
An adverb that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb.
Conjunctive Adverb
An adverb that connects two independent clauses.
Coordinating Conjunction
A conjunction that connects words, phrases, and clauses of equal rank.
Subordinating Conjunction
A conjunction that connects independent and dependent clauses.
Correlative Conjunctions
Pairs of conjunctions that link elements of similar importance.
Preposition
A word that shows the relationship between two things.
Interjection
A short exclamation that expresses emotion or demands something.
