Stratum corneum
Dead, keratin-filled, very flattened cells are
constantly shed and replaced
Stratum lucidum
Proteins and fats are dispersed through
dead cells so they look clear
Stratum granulosum
Grains of protein and lipids accumulate to
make the cells look grainy
Stratum spinous
Cells are bound together via desmosomes.
When the cells shrink during some kinds of
slide preparation they appear spiny.
Stratum basale
Deepest, single layer of cells in contact
with the basement membrane. These
immature cells do not look squamous.
