Gravitational radiation
The gravitational equivalent of electromagnetic radiation predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity, produced by moving massive bodies.
Weber-bar antenna
A detector pioneered by Joseph Weber in the late 1960s using a heavy bar, often weighing several tons, to look for strains caused by gravitational radiation.

Weber-type gravity wave antenna
A device comprising a heavy bar suspended in a metal vacuum chamber with lead and rubber sheets for seismic insulation, connected to piezo-electric crystals, an amplifier, and a chart recorder.
Piezo-electric crystals
Strain-sensitive crystals fixed to a metal bar that produce a tiny electrical potential when distorted by vibrations.
Thermal noise
A continual background signal registered by strain gauges above absolute zero, caused by the random movements of the bar's own atoms.
Sidereal correlation
A pattern where peak detector activity repeats according to the astronomical day (star time) rather than the solar day, suggesting an extraterrestrial source outside the solar system.
Experimenter's regress
The paradox where an experimental result can only be validated if the detector is known to be good, but a detector's quality can only be determined if the correct result is already known.
