What is self concept?
Multi-dimensional construct made up of 3 pillars:
self knowledge (who am i?)
self expectation (who or what do i want to be?)
self evaluation (how well do i like myself?)
Which of the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs relate to self concept?
Self-esteem and self-actualization
What are nursing diagnoses related to self concept?
disturbed body image
disturbed personal identity
low self-esteem
How do you assess self-concept?
Assess how well pt can express these concepts:
personal identity (how well does pt define who they are)
personal strengths
body image
self-esteem
role performance (parent, employee, community member)
Define self esteem vs self concept vs self knowledge
Self esteem: need to feel good about oneself and believe others hold one in high regard
Self concept: overall mental image of self
Self knowledge: facts, qualities, images, feelings one holds about onself
What are coopersmith’s four bases of self-esteem?
1 - significance to others
2 - competence (think work or roles)
3 - virtue (ethics/morals)
4 - power (influence over ones life)
