Atomic radius trend
Increases DOWN and LEFT on the periodic table
Ionization energy trend
Increases UP and RIGHT on the periodic table
Electron affinity trend
Generally becomes more favorable UP and RIGHT on the periodic table.
Cation size rule
Formed by losing electrons, resulting in a smaller size than the parent atom.
Anion size rule
Formed by gaining electrons, resulting in a larger size than the parent atom.
Isoelectronic series size rule
For species with the same number of electrons, those with more protons are smaller.
Ionic size for the same element
The ion is smaller when it has more + charge.
Transition-metal cation electron removal
Electrons are removed from the highest n first, meaning the 4s orbital comes off before the 3d orbital.
Common main-group cation charges
Atoms in Group 1 form +1 ions and atoms in Group 2 form +2 ions.
Common main-group anion charges
Group 15 corresponds to −3, Group 16 to −2, and Group 17 to −1.
