Two types of cells and what are they
Prokaryotic cell- cell without a nucleus
Eukaryotic- contains a nucleus
What is a plasma membrane used for
To separate a barrier between extracellular and intracellular fluids
What is in a plasma membrane
Phospholipids, protein, carbohydrates and lipids
What is the role of the lipids in a plasma membrane
To produce strength and structure to counteract for the fluidity of the phospholipids
What is the role of carbohydrates in a plasma membrane
They attach to lipids and proteins
Called glycolipids or glycoproteins
Why are phospholipids water loving and water hating
Have hydrophilic heads that are water loving made up of nitrogen, phosphate and glycerol
Have hydrophobic tails that are water hating made up of fatty acid tails
What forms a phospholipid bilayer?
The phospholipid tails facing inwards and heads outwards
The phospholipid bilayer function
to create a barrier to stop ions and solids getting through its selective
Doesn’t allow different organelles to leak out the cell
Messages signalling chemicals binding to proteins
Plasma membrane tasks
Transport solutes from extra cellular to intercellular layers
For cell to cell recognition where carbohydrates bind to proteins
Receptors- detect changes so receptors bind to proteins
Attachment- to cytoskeleton
