Concrete image
An image that appeals directly to the senses (sight, taste, smell etc)
Abstract image
An image that refers to ideas, qualities, or concepts rather than physical things.
Paraphras
A restatement of a poem in your own words, simplifying it while keeping the meaning.
Lyric poem
A short poem expressing personal emotion or thought (by 1 person)
Ode
A formal, ceremonious lyric poem that addresses and praises a person, thing, or idea.
Simile
A comparison using like or as
Metaphor
a direct comparison between 2 unlike things saying one IS the other.
Analogy
Comparison in which one idea, thing, or relationship is explained by showing how similar it is to another familiar relationship.
Synesthesia
A figure of speech blending sensory experiences (loud colors, sweet sound)
Allusion
A brief reference to a person, place, event, or literary work the reader should recognize.
Personification
Giving human qualities or behaviors to non human things.
Myth/mythology
Stories that explain origins, values or beliefs of a culture. Used in poetry as symbolism.
Synechdoche
A figure of speech in which a part represents the whole or a whole represents a part (all hands on deck = all sailors needed)
Metonymy
A figure of speech where something is referred to by something closely associated with it. (The crown = king)
Symbol
An object, image or action that stands for a broader idea or meaning.
Allegory
A narrative where characters, events or setting represent abstract ideas.
Caesura
A deliberate pause within a line of poetry, marked by punctuation.
Enjambment
When a line of poetry carries over into the next line without grammatical pause.
End-stop
A line of poetry that concludes with a natural pause, signaled by punctuation.
Elegy
A poem of mourning- often reflective, lamenting loss, death or sorrow.
