What do you call this picture? Explain.
This is the “Anatomical Position.” It is when the body is standing erect, with head and eyes facing forward, arms at sides with palms forward, and feet parallel with toes pointing forward.
What does Anterior mean? And what is the other common term for it?
Anterior means front of the body. The other term for it is ventral, which means the belly side of the body.
What does Dorsal mean? And what is the other common term for it?
Posterior means back of the body. The other term for it is dorsal, which means the upper side of the back.
Define superior and inferior.
Superior - above or toward the head.
Inferior - below or toward the feet.

What plane separates the superior and inferior portions?
Transverse plane

What plane separates the body into anterior and posterior portions?
Sagittal plane
Define medial and lateral.
Medial - toward the midline of the body.
Lateral - away from the midline of the body, toward the sides.

What plane separates the medial and lateral portions?
Medial - toward the midline of the body.
Lateral - away from the midline of the body, toward the sides.
Define proximal and distal.
Proximal - closer to the point of attachment or origin of a body part.
Distal - farther from the point of attachment or origin.
Define superficial and deep.
Superficial - closer to the surface of the body.
Deep - farther beneath the surface of the body.
What are the different types of sagittal plane? And then define.
Midsagittal (median) plane - divides the body into equal left and right halves.
Parasagittal plane - divides the body into unequal left and right portions.
For easy memory:
Midsagittal = middle/equal
Parasagittal = beside the middle/unequal
What is oblique plane?
A Plane that cuts through the body at an angle, rather than straight horizontally or vertically.
For easy memory:
Oblique → diagonal/angled
