Americans with Disabilities Act ADA
Signed into law July 26th 1990
Prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability
ADA Guarentees
enjoy employment, use transportation, access public spaces and other services
Disability
A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual
Manual Tasks, Major life activities
Eating, sleep, speaking, breathing, walking, standing, llifting, working, reading, learning
cognitive function, Major life activities
Thinking, concentrating
Sensory function, major life activities
Hearing and seeing
Bodily functions, major life activities
Circulation, individual organ function
Title I
Requires covered employers to provide reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities
Prohibits discrimination based on disability in all aspects of employment
Title II
Public services
Services available to people w/o disabilities cannot be denied to people w/ disabilities
public transportation must be accessible
Title III
Public Accommodations
Requires newly constructed public accommodations to be accessible
Pre-existing facilities have to have barriers removed if possible
Title IV
Telecommunications
Telephone relay systems and closed captioning for the deaf must be available
Title V
Miscellaneous Provisions
Prohibits:
A. coercing or threatning
B: Retaliating against indv. with disabilities or those attempting to aid people with disabilities in asserting their rights under the ADA
