Evolutionary Medicine
A field that applies principles of evolutionary biology to the understanding and treatment of diseases.
Virulence
The ability of a pathogen to cause disease.
Attenuated Vaccine
A vaccine that contains a weakened form of the pathogen, which can still provoke an immune response without causing disease.
Universal Flu Vaccine
A theoretical vaccine that targets the base of hemagglutinin to provide protection against all strains of the influenza virus.
Antigenic Drift
The gradual mutation of virus antigens that occurs over time, leading to changes in the head of the hemagglutinin.
p53 Gene
A gene vital for preventing cancer by stopping the proliferation of mutated cells.
LIF6 Gene
A unique gene in elephants that triggers cell death in damaged cells and may have implications for cancer treatment in humans.
Mutation
A change in the DNA sequence that can lead to changes in the function of a gene or protein.
What is Rat-Bite Fever (RBF)?
Rat-Bite Fever (RBF) is a rare infectious disease caused by bacteria found in rodents.
