Oxymoron
A figure of speech in which contradictory statements are paired together.
Paradox
A seemingly absurd or contradictory statement that can be proven true upon further examination.
Dramatic Irony
An irony that occurs when the audience knows something that the characters do not.
Situational Irony
An irony that occurs when an event contrasts with what is expected to happen.
Verbal Irony
An irony that occurs when a character says something they do not actually believe, distinct from sarcasm which is intended to mock.
Metaphor
A comparison made without using like or as, for emphasis and vivid expression.
Personification
The attribution of human qualities to animals, objects, or ideas.
Soliloquy
A speech in which a character speaks their thoughts aloud, typically while alone.
Monologue
A long speech delivered by a character in a conversation.
Aside
A comment made by a character, often comical, directed to the audience or another character that is not heard by others.
Pun
A play on words that suggests two meanings.
Character Foil
Characters that contrast with the main character to highlight each other's qualities.
Comic Relief
The inclusion of humor in certain sections of a work to lessen tension.
Hyperbole
