GPO Testing Battery Structure
Consists of Part 1 - Electrical (75 questions), Part 2 - Operations (95 questions), and Part 3 - Mechanical (94 questions) for a total of 264 multiple-choice questions.
E (Voltage)
The electrical 'pressure' measured in volts.
I (Current)
The flow of electrons measured in amps.
R (Resistance)
The opposition to electrical flow measured in ohms.
Ohm’s Law Formulas
E=I×R, I=E/R, and R=E/I.
Power Formulas
P=I×E or P=I2R where P is power.
Series Circuit
A circuit where current is the same everywhere, voltages across components add up, and total resistance is the sum of all individual resistances (RT=R1+R2+R3+…).
Parallel Circuit
A circuit where voltage is the same across every branch and currents add up; total resistance is less than the smallest resistor.
Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL)
States that at any junction, the current entering must equal the current leaving (current in = current out).
Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL)
States that around any closed loop, the sum of voltage rises equals the sum of voltage drops (net voltage = 0).
Transformers
Components that change voltage levels (step-up or step-down) and work on alternating current (AC) only.
Megger
A specialized piece of test equipment used to measure insulation resistance.
Clamp-on ammeter
A device used to measure current without the need to break the electrical circuit.
Medium-Voltage Breaker Racking Safety
High-risk operation involving 4,160-volt (4.16kV) breakers that requires strictly following switching procedures to avoid arc flash and blast hazards.
Combined-Cycle Plant
A facility that generates electricity using both a gas turbine (burning fuel) and a steam turbine (using captured exhaust heat via an HRSG).
HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator)
A large heat exchanger that recovers heat from gas turbine exhaust to produce steam.
Economizers
HRSG components that preheat feedwater using leftover exhaust heat to improve overall efficiency.
Steam Drums
Critical HRSG components that separate steam from water and maintain the correct water level.
Superheaters
Components that heat steam above its boiling point to ensure it is dry and more powerful for the turbine.
Hydrogen-cooled Generators
Generators where hydrogen purity is critical to prevent explosion risks while providing cooling.
Wicket gates
Adjustable vanes in a hydropower system that control the flow and angle of water into the turbine.
Class A Fire
Involves paper, wood, or trash; used with water fire extinguishers.
Class B Fire
Involves oil, grease, or flammable liquids; typically extinguished with CO2 or foam.
Class C Fire
Involves electrical equipment; typically extinguished with CO2 or dry chemicals.
Class D Fire
Involves burning metals; requires special powder extinguishers.
Precision Tools (Mechanical)
Instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and torque wrenches used for measurement.

A specific type of welding rod used for out-of-position welding.
Lockout/Tagout (Clearances)
The safety process of isolating, de-energizing, and tagging equipment before maintenance work begins.
RMS Voltage Formula
RMS=Peak×0.707 or Peak=RMS/0.707.
Water Pressure Calculation
Approximate pressure in psi calculated as P=0.43×H, where H is the height of water in feet.
Temperature Conversion (°F)
∘F=(∘C×1.8)+32. A quick estimate is to double the ∘C and add 30.
