Beneficence
An ethical principle involving the right to freedom from harm and discomfort and the right to protection from exploitation.
Respect for human dignity
An ethical principle involving the right to self-determination and the right to full disclosure.
Justice
An ethical principle involving the right to fair treatment and the right to privacy.
Self-determination
The right of participants to decide voluntarily whether to participate in a study without risk of prejudicial treatment.
Full disclosure
The right of participants to have the nature of the study, the person's right to refuse participation, and the researcher's responsibilities fully described.
Informed consent
A safeguard where participants have adequate information about the research, comprehend that information, and can consent to or decline participation voluntarily.
Anonymity
A confidentiality procedure where the researcher cannot link participants to their data.
Vulnerable groups
Groups requiring special protection in research, including children, mentally or emotionally disabled people, severely ill or physically disabled people, the terminally ill, institutionalized people, and pregnant females.
Institutional Review Boards (IRB)
An external review committee that ensures the protection of human rights in research studies.
Data and Safety Monitoring Boards (DSMB)
Groups responsible for overseeing the safety of participants and the progress of a study.
Research misconduct
Fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results.
Fabrication
Making up data or results and recording or reporting them.
Falsification
Manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing or omitting data or results.
Plagiarism
The appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.
