Why did the Romans decide to overthrow their king and create a republic?

The current Roman king was abusing his power, so the Romans overthrew him

What problem were the Romans trying to solve by changing their government?

The Romans changed their government to make sure that people in power wouldn’t abuse their power, and also to make sure that their wasn’t only one person with absolute power

What powers did the consuls have?

Consuls were the heads of state, they were in charge of the state army, and they were the highest power

Why was it important for Rome to elect two consuls instead of just one leader?

They would both share the power, often taking turns so that it wasn’t just one person in power

How were Roman society and daily life divided between patricians and plebeians, and why did these divisions cause conflict?

Their classes weren’t equal, which led to only the rich being in control

What role did the Senate play in the Roman Republic?

The Senate was in control of the treasury, safety, law and order, and foreign policy

How did the Senate influence decisions and laws in the Roman Republic?

The senate’s advice on decisions and laws wasn’t official, but it was almost always followed

What two assemblies existed in Rome?

The two kinds of assemblies in Rome were the tribal assembly and the centuriate assembly

How did ordinary citizens participate in Roman government through voting?

CItizens could vote on important matters in assemblies.

How did the Romans use “checks and balances” to prevent any part of the government from becoming too powerful?

The Romans used checks and balances by giving each part of the government a way to check on another part.

What demands did the plebeians make during the Conflict of the Orders?

The plebeians demanded to have a say in government, as it was dominated by the patricians
