Industrial Hygiene
The science concerned with the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace environmental factors or hazards that may affect the health and safety of the worker.
Chemical Hazard
A substance that has the potential to cause harm to life or health, including gases, vapors, liquids, and aerosols such as dust, fibers, fumes, mists, and fogs.
Physical Hazard
An agent, factor, or circumstance that can cause harm with contact, including radiation, heat and cold stress, vibration, and noise hazards.
Biological Hazards
Organic substances that present a threat to the health of people and other living organisms, involving infectious agents in labs or non-infectious agents like bacteria and molds.
Ergonomic Hazards
Physical conditions that pose a risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system, such as awkward postures, static postures, high forces, or repetitive motion.
Physical Ergonomics
A branch of ergonomics dealing with working postures, materials handling, repetitive movements, workplace layout, and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MWSD).
Cognitive Ergonomics
A branch of ergonomics focused on mental workload, decision-making, skilled performance, and human-computer interaction.
Organizational Ergonomics
A branch of ergonomics concerned with working time, communication, staff resource management, work design, teamwork, and quality management.
Psychosocial Hazards
Workplace hazards stemming from work demands, inter-personal relationships, leadership style, and work-family conflict.
Engineering Control
A primary category of control measures used to manage workplace hazards alongside Administrative Control and Personal Protect(ive Equipment).
Acid Dilution Protocol
Safety procedure stating that when diluting acid with water, the acid shall be poured slowly into the water with constant stirring; water shall never be poured into acid.
Exposure Records
Accurate records maintained by the employer of employee exposure to potentially toxic materials, which must be open to authorized agents and exposed workers.
Spillage of Acids and Alkalies
A safety rule requiring that spilled corrosive acid must not be absorbed by organic materials like sawdust but must be flushed with water or neutralized with chalk or lime.
Vats and Tanks Height Rule
Safety regulation stating that if the top of a tank containing hot corrosive or toxic liquids is less than 1m (3.3ft) above the floor, it must be raised or guarded.
Personal Cleanliness Rule
Requirement for workers exposed to toxic substances through ingestion to wash faces and hands thoroughly before eating, drinking, smoking, or leaving the premises.
