What is a radiograph?
A two-dimensional image with many shades of grey created when x-rays pass through a three-dimensional object

When structures superimpose each other, their opacities are said to “summate” = their opacities add together to appear different than each individual organ
Overlapping structures create a summation opacity artifact termed “summation sign”
