Three states of matter
The three physical forms in which a substance can exist: solid, liquid, and gas, depending on temperature.
Standard reference temperature for state of matter
The room temperature baseline set at 20∘C used to characterize whether a substance is solid, liquid, or gas.
Sublimation
The phase transition in which a substance converts directly from a solid state into a gaseous state, observed in substances like iodine, dry ice, and ice.
Dry ice
The common name for solid carbon dioxide, which directly sublimates into a gas.
Reverse sublimation
The process where a gas transitions directly into a solid deposit, as exemplified by hail and snow.
