Mastitis
inflammation of the breast tissue when bacteria from newborn’s mouth or mother’s hands enter through crakc in the nipple causing infection.
S/S of Mastitis
redness, warmth, & pain

How to identify and prevent mastitis
Mastitis causes breast redness and flu-like symptoms
continue to empty the breast feeding/pumping)q 2-3 hrs
ensure proper latch to avoid cracking nipples
What is Dysfunction Labor?
lack of labor progression due to maternal fatigue/ineffective pushing or fetal malposition
What are the nursing interventions for labor dystocia?
perform Leopold’s maneuver
Perform intermittent urinary
Tell the client to rest form pushing
Expected Newborn reflexes
Extrusion: when tongue touched it pushes forward and out
Babinski: when stoking the sole of the feet it causes the toes to fan
Rooting: when stroking the cheek, head turns toward the direction of the stimulus
Grasp: when touching the palm or sole, fingers or towes curl and wrap around stimulus

What is a non-stress test?
evaluates fetal well-being by assessing fetal heart rate in response to fetal movements using external fetal monitoring.
Positive reactive non- stress Test
2 or more FHR accelerations 15 beats/min or more for >15 secs or more in 20 minutes
indicates healthy fetal well-being.
What is a nonreactive nonstress test?
absence of FHR accelerations or less than 15 beats/ min
What are nursing interventions when shoulder dystocia occurs?
lower HOB
Hyperflex the legs
Apply suprapubic pressure ( McrRoberts maneuver)
Call neonatal intensive care staff
