What is the Old Testament and the New Testament?
The Old Testament is what was written before Jesus, foreshadowing the coming of the messiah. The Old Testament contains the Mosaic Law and is what Jewish people follow.
What language was the Bible written in?
Old testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament was written in Greek
What does Inerrancy mean?
That the Bible was written without any error and is completely truthful/reliable.
What does it mean to read the Bible contextually? Literally?
To read the Bible contextually means to look past the face value, seeing the deeper meanings within. To read it literally means to take scripture at face value.
Religious truth
truths that are faith based. All scripture is religious truth because it is about our relationship with God
Scientific truth
truths based on facts and data
Historical truth
stories of past events that are backed up by a respectable source
Moral truth
rules about good behaviour based on what is right and wrong. They can change based on society’s interpretation.

poetic language used to emphasize a lesson. They need to be interpreted

stories that aren't necessarily true and focus on who God is, the origins of the universe, who we are, and what is good. Usually the first 11 chapters of Genesis.

The creation story teaches us that humans were made in the image of God and were made perfect.
What is human dignity?
The unique worth and value that we possess simply for being human, being created like God

From conception, we already have human dignity and are an image of God.
What are the two aspects of the human person?
Relational (needs God and others) and ordered toward goodness from the moment of our conception

Emotions/passions: ability to feel
What is Original Sin?
Original Sin is the sin that was first committed by Adam (eating the forbidden fruit) that makes all humans have the tendency to sin.

What is the definition of sin?
Sin is an action/thought that goes against what God wants us to do, and what God loves.
What are the three conditions that determine whether something is a mortal sin?
-Are they aware of what they’re doing
-Do they have free will
-Is it a grave matter
What is a venial sin?
A sin that only harms the love of God in their heart but doesn’t fully kill it

What does each deadly sin idolize?

What does Jesus’ parable of the Lost Sheep teach us about sin and forgiveness?
This parable teaches us that we often stray away from God and his love, yet Jesus is always willing to come find us. This shows that even though we sin, it is with God’s love and grace that we are forgiven and taken back to him.
What is a covenant?
A sacred agreement between human beings and God where mutual commitments are made based on faith.

What are the 10 Commandments? Give a real life example for each.

Keep the Sabbath day holy. e.g. keeping a day for worship, a day spent building relationships with God, family, friends, and community

What is the “Incarnation?”

What does the word “beatitude” mean

What does “counter-cultural'' mean?” How are the beatitudes countercultural?
Counter cultural means something that goes against the current societal norm. The beatitudes are counter cultural because they teach us that true happiness comes from character, not material possessions like wealth.
Name and explain each of the Beatitudes with examples
-Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (not bragging about test scores even when one has the highest mark)
-Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted (losing a loved one and being in a state of regret)
-Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the Earth (walking away from a fight)
-Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied (defending those who are less fortunate)
-Blessed are the pure of heart for they will see god (putting the needs of the less fortunate before their own needs)
-Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God (help people come to a mutual agreement)
-Blessed are the merciful for they will receive mercy (forgiving a man who injured you)
-Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’s sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (being made fun of for volunteering instead of hanging out with friends at the mall)
Why did Jesus teach us the Beatitudes? How are they a model for good living?
Jesus teaches us the Beatitudes to show us that happiness comes from faith
and love, not in worldly possessions. They are a model for good living because not only do they help us in our everyday lives, but they help us spiritually.
What is Jesus’ law of love?
Jesus’s law of love is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and to love others as you would love yourself.
How is Jesus’ covenant (law of law) different from the covenant with Moses?
His covenant is different because it is meant for everybody, and isn’t physical but is written on our hearts instead.
Explain why God became human and what is has to do with salvation history
God became human to not only teach us how to be better, but to also fulfill all broken covenants from before through Jesus.
What is a disciple? What is an apostle? How did the apostles follow Jesus with “their whole selves”
A disciple is someone that is a follower of a teacher, leader or other things. An apostle is the original 12 disciples that originally followed Jesus. They followed Jesus with their whole selves by following with heart, head, and hands.
What is character? What is personality? How is character formed? What does it mean that in order to live the law of love we need to include our head, heart and hands?
Character is who we have created. Character is made by our moral identity and the choices that we make in our lives.
What is the Catholic Church’s teaching on life? When is life considered sacred?
Life is considered sacred from the moment we are conceived and it is considered murder to have an abortion
What is human dignity? How is this connected to what the church teaches about abortion and assisted suicide?
Human dignity talks about how all life is sacred because we are made in the image of God.
What is chastity? What is abstinence? How does seeing our bodies as a gift help us to treat our bodies with respect when it comes to sexual intimacy?
Chastity is the act of refraining from any and all acts of sexual immorality, typically all sexual activity. Abstinence is refraining from doing something, such as sex.
What are passion/emotions? Why are they important? Why is it important that we develop ways in which we handle our emotions positively?
Passion/emotions are your feelings toward anything. They are important because they enable us to make actions in the spirit of righteousness. It is important to develop ways in which we handle our emotions so not only can we avoid falling into sin, but we can glorify God’s name.

What is faith? How does faith develop?
Faith is believing in God and what he has planned for us without needing proof

Prayer is our relationship with God and how we communicate with him

intercession: asking God for other people

What is agape love? Explain how this type of love is the love that Christ asks us to practice.
It is unconditional love that is for everyone because Jesus told us to love our neighbour like we love ourselves.

Conscience is the voice of God in our heads and it helps us make decisions that are in favour of the most loving thing
