Chemical Reaction
A process in which two or more reactants combine to form a product or a new substance.
Physical Change
A change that is usually reversible and does not produce a new substance, such as melting ice.
Chemical Change
An irreversible change where a new substance is formed and chemical reactions occur.
Skeletal Equation
An unbalanced chemical equation where the number of atoms of each element is not the same on both sides.
Balancing an Equation
The process of ensuring that the number of each type of atom is the same on both sides of a chemical equation.
Endothermic Reaction
A reaction that absorbs heat from the surroundings.
Exothermic Reaction
A reaction that releases heat to the surroundings.
Combustion
A chemical reaction that typically involves the burning of a substance in oxygen, producing heat and light.
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction in which a single reactant breaks down into two or more products.
Reduction
A chemical process where a substance gains electrons or decreases its oxidation state.
Oxidation
A chemical process where a substance loses electrons or increases its oxidation state.
Double Displacement Reaction
A reaction where two compounds exchange ions or form new compounds.
Single Displacement Reaction
A reaction where an element displaces another in a compound.
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using sunlight.
Combustion of Natural Gas
A chemical reaction involving methane and oxygen that produces carbon dioxide, water, and heat.
Evolution of Gas
The production of gas during a chemical reaction, often indicated by bubbling or fizzing.
Precipitate Formation
The formation of an insoluble solid from a liquid solution during a chemical reaction.
