Development
The process of improving the conditions of people through diffusion of knowlegde and technology
HDI
Human development index; measured by a decent standard of living, a long and healthy life, and access to knowlegde
GNI
Gross national income; an economic term used to measure decent standard of living
PPP
Purchasing power parity; an economic term used to measure decent standard of living
Long and healthy life
A component of the HDI index measured by life expectancy
Access to Knowlegde
A component of HDI combining measures of years of schooling for adults and expected years of schooling for youth
Pupil/teacher ratic
An additional measure used to form the access to knowlegde component of HDI
Literacy rate
An additional measure used to form the access to knowlegde component of HDI
Primary sector
Economic activities where resources come from the Earth, such as agriculture, mining, and fishing
Secondary sector
The economic sector involving manufacturing
Tertiary sector
A serviced economy consisting of services
Wallenstein's cand-Systems theory
A theory describing unequal and uneven development through the classification of core, semi-hemisphere, and periphery countries
Core
Developed countries with a strong economic base
Semi-hemisphere
Developing countries with a louer Standard of living than core countinies but higher than a periphery
Periphery country
Less developed countries with a poor economy
Standard of living
Based on economic sectors (primary, secondary, and tertiary)
