  • However TV was silent so subtitles were used (big issue for illiterate people

  • Not a lot of channels on TV yet an Italian course was promoted for those who were illiterate

  • Dictation classes also shown on TV to eliminate dialects and accents - keeping to one language and accent across the country

Dialects and cultures across regions

  • Restricted dialects as if one was to join the army they would need to be able to communicate with one another, it is a national job

  • Conservative family - men encouraged to fight and women stayed at home as family models

  • Forbidden to use dialects or have any other culture-influenced aspects to the region

  • Acosta Valley had a French influence but fascist state wanted clear borders

  • German influence also in Northern Italy

  • Forbidden for immigrants to enter the country for similar reasons

  • Foreign names and any foreign words were not allowed
