Calorimetry
The science of measuring heat changes in physical and chemical processes.
Heat Capacity
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.
Endothermic Reaction
A reaction that absorbs heat from its surroundings, resulting in a temperature decrease.
Exothermic Reaction
A reaction that releases heat to its surroundings, leading to a temperature increase.
Specific Heat
The amount of energy required to change the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.
Equilibrium Temperature
The temperature at which two substances in contact with each other reach thermal equilibrium, meaning they have the same temperature.
Q (Heat Change)
The symbol representing the amount of heat absorbed or released in a process.
Joule (J)
The SI unit of energy; equivalent to the work done when a force of one newton moves an object one meter.
∆T (Change in Temperature)
The difference between the final temperature and the initial temperature, often represented as Tf - Ti.
Coffee-cup Calorimeter
A simple device used to measure the heat of chemical reactions or physical changes, typically insulated.
