Near Side
The side of the moon that always faces the Earth.
Far Side
The side of the moon that always faces away from the Earth.
Moon's Rotation and Revolution
The moon rotates and revolves approximately every 29.5 days.
Phases of the Moon
The different shapes of the moon visible from Earth, caused by the moon's revolution around Earth.
Waxing
Increasing in illumination; getting brighter.
Waning
Decreasing in illumination; getting dimmer.
Tides
The rise and fall of ocean water that occurs approximately every 12.5 hours.
High Tide
Occurs when the moon is parallel to the Earth (0° and 180°).
Low Tide
Occurs when the moon is perpendicular to the Earth (90°).
Spring Tide
A tide with the greatest difference between consecutive low and high tides.
Neap Tide
A tide with the least difference between consecutive low and high tides.
