Unspoken rules by society
Normative : Wanting to fit in. Laughing at a joke bcs everyone else is laughing even though it isnt funny
Informative: You think others know better than you. In a fancy rest observing and copying dinner manners

Eg: Buying trendy clothes because everyone is buying them
Group Polarization
When a group discussion makes people’s opinions more extreme.
Example: A political discussion making people more radical in their views.
Persuasion
Conformity
Changing your behavior to match a group.
Example: Wearing the same style of clothes as your friends.
Group think
When a group values harmony over good decision-making.
Example: A team agreeing on a bad idea just to avoid conflict.
Central Route Persuasion
Persuasion using logic and facts.
Example: A car ad listing safety features and gas mileage.
Obedience
following directions from an authority figure

not taking responsibitiy because you think someone else will

Persuasion using emotions or attractiveness.
eg: A celeb promoting a perfume

proritizing personal goals over the group.

Social Loafing
people putting less effort in a group than when alone
Eg: A team project where no one puts any effort in.
Social Facilitation
prefroming better on single induvidual tasks people are watching
eg: Running faster when competing in front of a crowd.
Collectivism
Prioritizing group goals over individual ones.
eg: A family business where everyone works together for success.
Deindividuation
Losing self-awareness in a group and acting differently.
eg: Acting wild in a concert but being quiet alone.
False Consensus Effect
thinking more people agree with you than they actually do
Eg: Thinking everyone loves the same tv show as you
Superordinate Goals
Goals that bring people together, despite differences.
Example: Rival teams working together to clean up a community park.
Social Trap
short term benefits lead to long term harm
Over fishing leads to fish shortages
Altruism
helping others with no expectation of reward
Social Reciprocity Norm
The expectation to return a favor.
Example: Giving a gift back to someone who gave you one.
Bystander Effect
The more people around, the less likely anyone helps.
Example: Seeing someone hurt on the street but assuming someone else will help.
Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM)
Explains how people are persuaded (central or peripheral route).
Example: Choosing a college based on rankings (central) vs. a fun commercial (peripheral).

eg: helping an elderly person cross the street
Halo Effect
expecting a person has a lot of good traits based on one good trait
Eg; thinking an attractive person is smart and funny
