Diversity
The differences between individuals, groups, or organizations based on physical attributes, characteristics, skill sets, age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation.
Glass Ceiling
A metaphor alluding to an invisible barrier that prevents women and individuals from minority backgrounds from being promoted to top corporate positions.
Glass Ceiling Commission
A federal commission that conducted research noting that African Americans experienced the lowest promotion rate and had the most difficult time climbing the corporate ladder.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act
One of the federal discrimination laws governing companies to ensure fair hiring and employment practices.
Age Discrimination in Employment Act
Federal legislation protecting individuals from workplace discrimination based on age.
Ethnicity
The practice of grouping people based on a shared origin or characteristics, such as country of origin or physical appearance.
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
A law prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities that requires companies to make reasonable accommodations to enable them to work.
Socioeconomic Background
A source of diversity referring to an individual's family origin, social standing, and economic status.
Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment
A type of sexual harassment in an organization where an employee is asked or forced to perform sexual favors in exchange for a reward, promotion, or benefit.
Hostile Work Environment Sexual Harassment
A form of harassment occurring when actions such as telling lewd jokes, displaying pornography, or making sexually oriented remarks render the workplace unpleasant.
