Triple Beam Balance
•Instrument used to measure the mass usually up to 2 decimal places
Top-Loading Balance
•used to weigh quantities up to 2 decimal places
Analytical Balance
•used to weigh quantities up to 4 decimal places
Direct Weighing
•A substance is placed directly on a balance and the mass is read.
•Weighing directly requires that the balance be carefully zeroed.
•For solids, use a container to place the solid.
To contain
•Volumetric equipment designed to contain a specified amount of liquid
•Marked with a TC
To deliver
•Volumetric equipment designed to deliver a specified amount of liquid
•Marked with a TD
Beakers
•features a flat bottom and a beak (or small pout)
•used as a reaction container or to hold liquid or solid samples
•used to catch the filtrates from filtering operations
•can be heated
Erlenmeyer flask
•have wide bottom, conical bodies, and tall cylindrical necks
•slanted sides and narrow necks allow the contents to be mixed without the risk of spills
•used to contain liquids and for mixing, cooling, incubation, filtration, storage
•useful in titration and for boiling liquids
•can be heated
Graduated Cylinder
•have a narrow cylindrical shape with markings along the cylinder that represents the amount of liquid being measured
•used to measure liquids
•more accurate than beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks but should not be used for volumetric analysis
•CAN NOT BE HEATED
Volumetric flask
•have long elongated and narrow neck that have a single etched ring graduation mark that indicates the volume contained when the flask is filled to that point
•used in preparation of solutions with accurate concentration
•CAN NOT BE HEATED
Serological Pipettes
•graduated glass or plastic pipettes that are used to measure and dispense a specific volume of liquid
Mohr Pipettes
•graduated glass or plastic pipets that are used to measure and dispense a specific volume of liquid
Volumetric Pipettes
•glass pipettes that are calibrated to accurately measure a fixed amount of liquid
•the pipet has a reservoir between two elongated sections and a single graduation mark
Aspirator
•used to draw liquids into the pipette
Glass rod
•used in stirring liquids
Test tubes
•have round bottom and cylindrical long narrow neck
•used to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals especially for qualitative experiments
Test tube holder
•used in holding the test tubes while heating
Pasteur pipette
•used to drop small amount of liquid
Mortar and Pestle
•used in crushing solids to smaller pieces or in grinding solids to fine powder
Glass funnel
•used to reduce risk of spillage or loss when filtering, filling, or transferring liquids from one container to another
Spatula
•used for scraping, transferring, or applying solids (ex. powders)
Watch glass
•circular concave piece of glass used as a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a small amount of substance and a cover for a beaker
Evaporating Dish
•shallow open containers used for evaporation of solutions to produce a concentrated solution or a solid precipitate of a substance
Thermometer
•measures the temperature of a solution
Tongs
•used in holding hot objects (example: evaporating dish)
Tirill burner
•used as a heat source
