Geography
The science that studies the relationships among geographic areas, natural systems, society, cultural activities, and the interdependence of all these through space.
Spatial
A term referring to the nature and character of physical space and the distribution of things within it.
Five Themes of Geographic Science
The core framework of geographic investigation consisting of location, place, region, movement, and human-Earth relationships.
Scientific Method
A systematic process of observing nature, forming a hypothesis, conducting hypothesis testing through experiments, undergoing peer review, and developing a scientific theory.
System
Any ordered, interrelated set of things and their attributes, linked by flows of energy and matter.
Open System
A system with inputs of energy or matter and outputs of energy or matter, such as Earth in terms of energy.
Closed System
A system shut off from the surrounding environment so that it is self-contained, such as Earth in terms of physical matter and resources.
Negative Feedback
Feedback information that discourages change in a system, serving to stabilize system operations.
Positive Feedback
Feedback information that encourages change in a system, serving to destabilize system operations.

Arctic Sea Ice Positive Feedback Loop
A self-reinforcing process where rising temperatures melt sea ice, exposing darker ocean surface, altering reflectivity (albedo) so the ocean reflects less sunlight and absorbs more heat, driving further temperature increases.
Earth's Four Spheres
The major systems dividing Earth into three abiotic (non-living) spheres—atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere (geosphere)—and one biotic (living) sphere, the biosphere.
Atmosphere
The thin, gaseous layer surrounding Earth, held by gravity, forming an abiotic sphere essential for life.
Hydrosphere
The abiotic sphere containing all of Earth's water in liquid, solid (cryosphere), and gaseous forms.
Lithosphere
The abiotic sphere comprising Earth's crust and upper mantle, representing the solid rock and landforms of the geosphere.
Biosphere
The biotic sphere of Earth containing all living organisms and their relationships with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.
Geoidal Bulge
The enlargement of Earth's diameter at the equator (12,756km) relative to the poles (12,714km) caused by the centrifugal force of Earth's rotation.
Latitude
The angular distance north or south of the Equator (0∘), measured in degrees from the center of Earth up to 90∘N at the North Pole or 90∘S at the South Pole.
Parallel
A line connecting all points along the same angle of latitude on Earth's surface.

Latitudinal Geographic Zones
The standard latitudinal divisions of Earth's surface, including Equatorial and tropical (23.5∘N to 23.5∘S), Subtropical (23.5∘ to 35∘ N/S), Midlatitude (35∘ to 55∘ N/S), Subarctic/Subantarctic (55∘ to 66.5∘ N/S), and Arctic/Antarctic (66.5∘ N/S to the poles).
Longitude
The angular distance east or west of a point on Earth's surface (the prime meridian), measured in degrees from the center of Earth up to 180∘.
Prime Meridian
The designated 0∘ line of longitude passing through Greenwich, England, serving as the starting line for measuring east or west longitude.
Meridian
A line connecting all points along the same angle of longitude on Earth's surface.
Great Circle
Any circle on Earth's surface created by a plane passing directly through Earth's center, dividing the globe into two equal halves.
Small Circle
A circle created by a plane intersecting the globe without passing through Earth's center, splitting the globe into unequal sections.
International Date Line
An official boundary located approximately along the 180th meridian (180∘E or 180∘W) where each calendar day officially begins and ends.
Map Scale
The ratio of the size of an area on a map to the actual size of that area on the ground, represented via a representative fraction, written scale, or graphic scale.

Map Projection
The mathematical reduction and transformation of Earth's spherical three-dimensional surface onto a flat two-dimensional surface.
Equal-Area Projection
A class of map projection that preserves the true sizes of geographic areas across the map while distorting their shape.
Conformal Projection
A class of map projection that preserves true landmass shapes and angles locally while distorting their true area size.

Global Positioning System (GPS)
A satellite-based geoscience tool that uses radio signals transmitted from multiple satellites to calculate precise locations on Earth's surface.
Remote Sensing
The science and technique of obtaining information about Earth's surface or features without making direct physical contact.
Active Remote Sensing
A remote-sensing technique where an instrument transmits its own beam of energy toward a surface and measures the reflected energy returned.
Passive Remote Sensing
A remote-sensing technique where an instrument records energy naturally radiated or reflected from a surface.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
A computer-based data processing tool that combines spatial data (location) and attribute data (characteristics) into layered map overlays for geographic analysis.

Planetesimal Hypothesis
The hypothesis that gravity caused a cloud of gas and dust to collapse and condense, leading to the formation of our Sun and Solar System planets.
Light-Year
The distance travelled by light in one year at a speed of 300,000km/s (186,000mi/s).
Plane of the Ecliptic
The flat, two-dimensional geometric plane containing the orbital path of Earth around the Sun.
Perihelion
The point in Earth's elliptical orbit when it is closest to the Sun at a distance of 147,255,000km (91,500,000mi), occurring annually on January 3.
Aphelion
The point in Earth's elliptical orbit when it is farthest from the Sun at a distance of 152,083,000km (94,500,000mi), occurring annually on July 4.
Fusion
The solar nuclear process in which hydrogen nuclei fuse together under intense pressure and temperature to form helium, releasing radiant energy.
Sunspots
Dark magnetic storms on the Sun's surface that are cooler than surrounding areas, larger than 12 times Earth's diameter, and follow an 11-year activity cycle.
Solar Wind
Clouds of electrically charged particles ejected from the Sun that travel through space and reach Earth in about three days.

Magnetosphere
Earth's surrounding magnetic field, which deflects incoming solar wind particles toward the poles and protects the planet.
Aurora
A luminous phenomenon in the upper atmosphere near the poles created when charged solar wind particles interact with Earth's magnetosphere.

Electromagnetic Spectrum
The full range of all possible wavelengths and frequencies of radiant energy.
Shortwave Radiation
Higher-energy, shorter-wavelength radiation emitted primarily by high-temperature bodies like the Sun (e.g., ultraviolet, visible, shortwave infrared).
Longwave Radiation
Lower-energy, longer-wavelength radiation emitted primarily by cooler bodies like Earth (e.g., thermal infrared).
Thermopause
The outer boundary of Earth's atmosphere at the top of the thermosphere where incoming solar energy is first intercepted.
Insolation
Incoming solar radiation intercepted by Earth's atmosphere and surface.
Solar Constant
The average value of insolation received at the top of Earth's atmosphere, equal to 1372W/m2.
Subsolar Point
The single location on Earth's surface where incoming insolation strikes at a direct 90∘ perpendicular angle.

Seasonality
The seasonal changes in the Sun's position (altitude) above the horizon and corresponding day length variations throughout the year.
Sun's Altitude
The angular height of the Sun above the horizon, measured in degrees.
Sun's Declination
The latitude location of the subsolar point on any given day, migrating between 23.5∘N and 23.5∘S during the year.
Axial Parallelism
The condition in which Earth's axis maintains a constant tilt of 23.5∘ relative to the plane of the ecliptic throughout its orbit, pointing continuously toward Polaris.
December Solstice
The solstice occurring on December 21 or 22 when the subsolar point is at the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5∘S).
June Solstice
The solstice occurring on June 20 or 21 when the subsolar point is at the Tropic of Cancer (23.5∘N).
March Equinox
The equinox occurring on March 20 or 21 when the subsolar point is directly over the Equator (0∘), resulting in equal 12-hour day and night worldwide.
September Equinox
The equinox occurring on September 22 or 23 when the subsolar point is directly over the Equator (0∘), resulting in equal 12-hour day and night worldwide.

Analemma
A figure-eight diagram plotting the Sun's declination for each day of the year against the equation of time in minutes.
