Sacramental Awareness
The ability to recognize God's presence and action in everyday life and creation.
Sacramental Dullness
The inability to perceive the sacred or God's presence in life. (People are too busy, Pain and suffering exist, People don't know where or what to look for.)= Solutions: Prayer, Reflection on creation, Participation in the sacraments and liturgy, Developing awareness of God's presence
Sacrament (the full definition and what each part means)
An efficacious sign of grace instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church by which divine life is dispensed to us → Jesus did not hand over a manual of how to do the sacraments, Efficacious = actually causes what it signifies, Sign = visible reality pointing to an invisible reality, Grace = God's free gift of divine life, Instituted by Christ = founded in Jesus' actions and teachings, Entrusted to the Church = the Church celebrates and safeguards them.

A spiritual mark that can never be removed... Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders

Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)... He is the Advocate who lives in believers, guiding, teaching, and strengthening them in truth... The Holy Spirit is the gift of God's presence and power given especially in Baptism and Confirmation to help Christians live holy lives and carry out God's mission.
Transubstantiation
What happens at consecration: the substance of bread and wine becomes Jesus, while the appearance stays the same.
Consecration
The part of Mass when the priest says Jesus' words and the bread and wine become Christ.
Eucharist (Thanksgiving)
The sacrament in which bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and are received by believers as spiritual food... means thanksgiving
Agape
A fellowship meal symbolizing Christian love and community, connected to early Eucharist practice.
Passover Seder
The meal Jesus celebrated at the Last Supper, connecting the Eucharist to liberation from Egypt.
Exodus
God freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt; it prefigures salvation and is connected to the Passover and Eucharist.
Tabernacle
sacred place in the church where the consecrated Eucharist is reserved because Jesus remains truly present.
Emmaus
The story where disciples recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread, connected to the structure of Mass.
Lamb
Jesus as the "Lamb of God" who sacrifices Himself for the salvation of the world, fulfilling Passover imagery.
Great Amen
the community's strong affirmation ("Yes" or "I believe") at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, confirming everything prayed and consecrated.
Viaticum
Eucharist given to someone who is dying, meaning "food for the journey" into eternal life.
Vernacular
The language spoken by the people (not Latin), used in Mass after Vatican II.
Absolution
The prayer and blessing by the priest where God forgives sins through the Church.
Repent
to be genuinely sorry for your sins and to make a firm decision to turn away from sin and return to God= involves a real change of heart, not just feeling bad, but choosing to live differently and repair your relationship with God.
Penance/Satisfaction
The actions given by the priest to repair harm caused by sin and help restore the relationship with God.
Seal of Confession
The absolute secrecy a priest must keep about anything confessed. A priest can never reveal sins confessed, under any circumstance.
Reconciliation
The sacrament that restores our relationship with God and the Church after sin; it means "coming back together."
wounded healers
you can heal others because you know what it is like to suffer and to be healed by God's love.
extreme unction
A term from the Latin for "last anointing." It once referred to the reception of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick just before death. It is accompanied by Viaticum.
