What is meant by internal energy?
Internal energy refers to the energy that is stored inside a system by the particles (atoms and molecules) that make up the system
What is internal energy made of?
It is the total :
Kinetic energy (the movement and speed)
Potential energy (the positions relative to each other)
of all the particles that make up the system
Describe the effect on heating on a substance’s internal energy.
Heating transfers energy to the particles (their kinetic energy stores causing them to move faster) which increases the internal energy
So heating changes the energy stored within the system by increasing the energy of the particles that make up the system
What are the two things that an increase in internal energy can cause?
Raises the temperature of the system
Produces a change of state
What does the increase in temperature depend on?
The increase in temperature will depend on the specific heat capacity
When will the change of state occur?
The change of state occurs when the particles will have enough energy in their kinetic energy stores to break the bonds (holding them together)
