What is the Retina?
The Retina is the multi-layered sensory (senrory) tissue that lines the back of the eye (also called fundus)
What are the two main types of photoreceptors in the retina?
Rods and Cones.
What is the function of the Retina?
It captures light rays and converts them into electrical impulses that are sent to the brain.
What is the Fovea?
The area at the posterior pole of the retina used for the sharpest acuity, central vision, and color vision (bullseye target) Fovea = one small spot for sharp vision
What is the Ora Serrata?
The peripheral end of the retina, continuous with the epithelial layer of the ciliary body.
What is the function of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE)?
It contains pigmented cells that interact with photoreceptors and support retinal health.
What happens during Retinal Detachment?
Separation between the Retinal Pigment Epithelium cells and photoreceptors, leading to fluid accumulation and potential tissue death.
What visual conditions are associated with Rods?
Rods are active in dim illumination and are responsible for night and peripheral vision. Night blindness and tunnel vision
What visual conditions are associated with Cones?
Cones are active in well-lit conditions and are responsible for daytime, color, and central vision. Loss of color and central detail
